My Daughter the Slasher

As you all know, several authors of gay romance started out writing fan fiction or slash for one fandom or the other. Personally, I didn’t even know what fanfic was until three years ago. Not until after I’d introduced my oldest daughter (referred to hereinafter as Dear Slasher Daughter or DSD) to the German band Tokio Hotel. I’ve always preferred books over movies and TV shows. It never occurred to me to search the world wide web for things on the few ones I liked enough to qualify me as a fan, so I never got to read any Roswell, Forever Knight, Galactica (the original one) or The Wise Guy yummy fics.

As it turns out not knowing the right term didn’t stop me from mentally writing some fic. I’ve been re-writing the BDB books in my head forever. You know all those Butch/V scenes where they don’t end up together? No way. I was so not having it, so I changed them all! But that’s it. Nothing really significant… I just like to imagine Butch and V getting it on *g*

Now DSD, who just turned 19, is a completely different matter. The girl lives for this thing. You know what’s the first thing she says to me every morning? “So last night I was reading/writing this fic…” I kid you not.

This is the reason why I decided to talk to her a bit about her passion. They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, yes? I’m an author, and some people tend to believe she takes after me. Nope. It’s all the way around. She was writing boy love years before I even considered the possibility of doing this :-)

TVD:  Can you tell us how did you discover slash?
DSD:  Er.. I think it was the Tokio Hotel fandom…pretty sure that's when I started reading it. Tumblr, I believe…
TVD:  Give me a concrete answer. I’m interviewing you.
DSD:  LOL
TVD:  I’m serious, Dear Slash Daughter…
DSD:  Okay, serious J… Alright, I believe I discovered it after you sent me the Tokio Hotel videos. I started looking for pictures of Bill and Tom Kaulitz on Google, and some of the first pictures that came up at the time were manips of the twins kissing, hugging, etc. You know, being more than brotherly.
TVD:    FYI the title of the post is “My Daughter the Slasher”.
DSD:   wejhfsdkh!! LMAO
TVD:   What is your favorite trope in the Tokio Hotel fandom?
DSD:   Well I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort, as long as there’s a happy ending. Honestly, I’ll read pretty much anything as long as there’s a happy ending, or at least an ending that hints at  a happy ending.
TVD:    What was your reaction the first time you read a twincest story?
DSD:    LOL Wow… Okay, I'm pretty sure it was something along the lines of 'I have no clue why I'm reading this, I shouldn't like it, but I want more now?’

TVD:    Tell me about Harry Potter slash.
DSD:    Can you be more specific?
TVD:    What’s the appeal?
DSD:    Well, because I ship Harry/Draco, I  think    it's the fact that they're enemies and I usually struggle to bring them together. So much fun!

TVD:   Talk to me about your favorite fandom.
DSD:    Definitely the Glee fandom! There are so many characters, and since I love to multi-ship, it's a lot of fun, because there are so many things to read and/or write.
TVD:    Which fandom is more difficult to write for?
DSD:     Glee fic is much more difficult to write in my opinion, mostly because the fandom is SO active, and it's very hard to write something that hasn't been done, or take something that has been done and give it your own twist.
TVD:    What made you want to write fanfiction?
DSD:    A lot of the times, especially when it comes to TV shows and movies, there are certain things that I don't like, or things that I would like to see explored in greater detail. It's really what makes me want to write for these fandoms.
TVD:   Why did you choose slash?
DSD:    Hmm, there is so much more potential for angst when it's slash in fandom. I love angst, so that could be why. I don't mind to read the straight couples, but definitely tend to read more slash than straight.
TVD:      I know you want to write a book. Are you finding it difficult to transition from slash to original fic?
DSD:    Extremely. It's very difficult to go from writing about characters that have already been created and whom you see interact on TV every week to creating your own.
TVD:    And when you finally get around to write original fic, it is going to be het or M/M?
DSD:     M/M. I tried writing het once upon a time, and I much prefer slash to het.
TVD:    So gay fiction then.
DSD:     Yes.
TVD:     You make your momma proud J
DSD:      LOLOLOLOL
TVD:     Bed now!
DSD:     LMAO
TVD:     Love you!
DSD:     Love you too!

That's the beauty of fanfic--it liberates the original material and sets it free.

  7. Love the interview and the banter between you two :)

Takes me back to the days when my boys would mimic my tendency to fill Sims houses with men only by pairing up Yu-gi-oh characters ;)
